Why “Drop2”

The name is a voicing.

Take a four-note chord in close position and let the second voice from the top fall an octave: the harmony opens up and settles under the hand. That’s a drop-2 voicing — the grammar of jazz guitar comping, from Wes Montgomery on down. Let the third voice fall instead and you get its wider sibling, the drop-3 voicing. Steer those shapes through a progression by the smallest possible moves and you are voice leading.

This app began life as a drop-2 trainer. The name stayed; the ambition grew.

What it does

It hears you

Play into the mic and Drop2 recognizes pitch and chord voicings in real time — no cables, no MIDI. Your guitar is the controller.

The fretboard, note by note

Hear or see a note, then find it on the neck. Spaced repetition keeps resurfacing the ones you miss, until you know every note on every string. No guitar to hand? Switch from Play to Tap: the app names a note and a string — F♯, string 4 — and you find it with a finger. No microphone, no permission, the same scheduler.

Scales and arpeggios, by ear

Play the one-octave shape for any root and quality, in any position. Every note is checked by ear, and the chord tones light up on a full-neck diagram.

Drop-2 voicings

Every inversion across three string sets — learn them with playback, drill them by playing, then comp them in time over the band. Answer a note at a time, or strum the whole shape: it checks every note, octave and all, so it knows which inversion you played. Solo over the changes

A walking bass and drums loop the tune you pick, in any key. The app names the guide tone to land on in each bar — or grades every note you choose to play instead.

Pure listening

No guitar, no mic. Drop2 plays an interval, a chord, a cadence, or a phrase and you answer on the neck — intervals as degree-labeled circles, chords as real drop-2 voicings in any inversion, where you name the quality or the voice on top, cadences as voice-led shapes that step across the fretboard as they sound, and phrases as short jazz lines you tap back note by note. Hold an answer to hear it before you commit.

The unglamorous part

A chromatic tuner, a metronome with a drum-kit voice, streaks, an activity heatmap, and a daily plan that targets exactly what you’re due to review — the engine of a 20-minute practice routine. Every drill that asks questions runs to a finish line: a set number of questions, a strip that fills as you answer, and a result card with your score and your personal best. Tell the app how long you have and whether you have a guitar, and the day’s workout plans the session — an ordered route across the trainers, each step sized to its share of the time. A Home Screen and Lock Screen widget keeps what’s due one tap away, and a daily reminder stays quiet unless something really is.

The fretboard trainer asks for an A on the D string, confirms the pitch it heard — correct, three cents sharp — and marks the note on a fretboard diagram. A switch above the question, Play or Tap, offers the same drill without a guitar.
